How a Week Camping Turned into a Summer-Long Cross-Canada Family Adventure

A week off and a thirst for adventure prompted a 2-month trip of a lifetime.

In August 2017, I packed the trunk of my car and took my two boys camping.

Armed with a tent, air mattress, cooler, and one bin of cooking and camping supplies, we travelled 1500 miles around Oregon for a week. We explored every day. We waded into waterfalls, hiked mountains, picked wild blackberries, and rolled down sand dunes. Each night came across a beautiful new place to set up camp.

That trip taught me how much we could experience with so little.

My husband and I had been dreaming of a Cross-Canada road trip, and suddenly the challenge of making the trip a reality disappeared. We had complicated and exaggerated what a trip like this would take. This one-week trip proved how simple it could be. I understood we could easily extend the time with little more than what we already had. If we could do it for one week, then we could do it for a summer.

So, we set to planning to make our dream trip come true.

In June 2018, our family of four set off from our home in British Columbia. We drove and camped and experienced as much of Canada as we could. And 56 days later we arrived in St John’s Newfoundland, sold everything except for our suitcases, and flew home.

It was the trip of a lifetime that maybe wouldn’t have happened without a little proof of what was possible.
